Tummy tuck is a common name given to a surgical procedure called abdominoplasty. It is normally performed after significant weight loss to improve the appearance of the abdominal area.
Though the name tummy tuck gives off an impression of it being a simple and minor procedure,it is in fact a major surgery.
What is done during an Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)
An incision is made just above the pubic area stretching from hip to hip to do the following:-
- removal of excess fat
- removal of excess loose skin
- removal of skin with stretch marks
- tightening of abdominal wall muscles with sutures
Possible side effects and risk factors
Although major complications after surgery are pretty rare, there is a possibility of the following side effects and risk factors:-
- permanent scarring
- suture rupture
- slow healing
- seroma –pocket of bodily fluid that sometimes develop after surgery
- bleeding
- blood clots, especially in the legs
- numbness
- skin discolouration
- asymmetry and recurrence of loose skin
- cardiac and pulmonary complications
- nerve damage
- adverse reaction to anaesthesia
- unsatisfactory results
- need for additional corrective surgery
How much does a tummy tuck cost
Prices for a tummy tuck can vary greatly according to location, the surgeon’s experience and the type of procedure used. The normal costs may include:-
- surgeon’s fee
- hospital and surgical facilities cost
- anesthesia fees
- medication
- post-surgery care
- medical tests
Ideally the tummy tuck should result in a flatter and firmer abdominal contour that is more proportionate with your body shape.
