Metabolism is the process how our body converts and uses energy from food and stored fat, ultimately affecting weight loss.
Learning how exercise increases metabolism may change your view on exercising. You will realise that it is just not a weight loss hype that fitness experts go around dishing. Whenever I’ve dieted without exercising, the weight loss almost comes to a screeching halt.
Exercise and metabolism have a symbiotic relationship. Exercise increases metabolism and an increased metabolism provides you with more energy to exercise. If we exercise smartly,we will activate increased metabolism in all three ways below:
- During exercise
- After exercise
- At rest
The best way to achieve maximum metabolic rate in the three levels above,is to combine cardio workouts with strength training.
Cardio sessions strengthen heart muscles and increase lung capacity. When these two organs are strong, they pump more oxygen rich blood to our body’s cells. They help these cells convert carbohydrates and fat into energy. That is why cardio exercises are said to increase stamina.
Not only does this process boost metabolism during exercise but the effects last for about an hour after exercise. So what happens after that hour. This is where strength training comes in to maintain optimum metabolism at rest.
Our body uses more energy to maintain muscles than fats. A pound of muscles needs 50 calories per day to be maintained while a pound of fat only requires 2 calories. Exercise and diet are the key ingredients if you want to lose weight and keep it off.
