Scary Statistics For MalaysiaScary Statistics For Malaysia

Quoting Dr Amir Farid Ishak (in Good Health Now in the Malaysian daily,The Star,Fit4Life Section,on Sunday 15 Nov 2009),“In 2006,a study revealed that about 45% of Malaysians were obese and overweight and the study also showed that almost 15% of those over 30 years old were diabetic,an increase of 250% over 10 years.  Over 25% also had high cholesterol.  If the trend continues, over 50% will be overweight/obese and one-third will be diabetic well before 2020.”

What a scary vision for 2020 !  I was definitely on my way to being a part of those statistics last year.  Looks like Malaysians are headed for a life of medical bills and pill popping to keep alive.

Let’s compare statistics with America, the land that gave birth to fast food.   64% are considered overweight and 26% obese.  Their forecast for the year 2015 is 75% of their population to be overweight and 41% obese.

Despite Malaysia being a third world country, the obesity rates are off the charts.  In his article Dr. Farid blames our unhealthy diets and lifestyles for this predicament.  We are aparently a nation that consumes too much white and unprocessed sugar that come with the teas, coffees and carbonated drinks and mee gorengs, nasi lemaks and roti chanais.

We Malaysians take pride in the variety of our food.  Fast food has also become trendy and a part of our culture.  Our children are growing up with the wrong message.

It is time to for a change and make health our priority.  We must start educating ourselves on the benefits of exercise and proper diet and how they are vital to living a healthy life.  Put an end to this epidemic and save ourselves beginning today!
