Exercising is an activity that people have generally come to dislike. Not only is hard physical activity painful not to mention the uncomfortable sweating once you do it,exercise has become a dirty word that people would like to avoid in their quest for weight loss.
So when someone who dislikes exercise decides to incorporate it into their lives out of desperation to lose weight, there is going to be many a day when excuses are your best friends. For a long time I gave so many excuses for not starting my strength training. Similarly I’ve also listened to countless excuses from others, why they couldn’t start exercising, excuses that are no strangers to me.
The bottom line is that exercise is essential to weight loss and maintenance. The old guideline of 30 minutes a day,5 days a week is no longer enough to sustain weight loss. As we seek convenience in our daily tasks and move about less and less, the need for physical activity grows by the day.
The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has recommended that for long-term weight loss,we should exercise a minimum of 250 minutes with regular strength training as part of the routine. That roughly works out to a 40 minute workout 6 times a week. If we workout 300 minutes per week the weight loss is even more significant.
Having long strolls in the park for the duration of the 40 minutes is not going to work. Each workout has to be a challenging session so that the body doesn’t get complacent and plateaus. When you decide to start exercising,be honest to yourself and get ready to face the drill.
