These days we hear a lot about how processed food causes weight gain. All raw food that are altered from their natural state can be considered processed food. The processed foods that we are concerned about and referring to here, are those that cause addiction and obesity.
Here are the types of processed foods that we should be wary of:-
- foods high in trans-fat such as fast food
- canned foods high in salt (sodium) and sugar
- refined grains and flour as opposed to whole grains
- packaged snacks and desserts like chips, cookies and cakes
- desserts rich in sugar and fat
- frozen dinners
- sugary breakfast cereals
- factory processed meats such as sausages and burgers
Foods in the above category are very high in calories and sugar but low in nutritional value. When the body does not receive enough nutrition it will keep giving hunger signals which increase our cravings.
Eating processed foods regularly means the body has to produce very high amounts of insulin to control the high blood sugar levels that these foods cause. Insulin helps transport sugar from the blood into our cells where some will be used as energy and the rest stored as fat. So high sugar levels in food equals to more stored fat.
High insulin levels also decreases blood sugar to such low levels, that the brain which needs glucose(sugar) for optimum performance, will start signaling for more food.
Processed foods also contain chemicals used as colouring and preservatives which increase toxicity of cells. The liver will then have to work harder at removing these toxins instead of burning fat which is one of its main functions.
Since we are now aware of how processed food cause weight gain,we should make an effort to change our eating habits by introducing more fresh and home cooked meals into our diet.
