Eating Too Much Too FastEating Too Much Too Fast

A study published in the British Medical Journal shows that there is a significant relationship between eating too fast and weight gain.  It study was conducted at the Osaka University,Japan and it observed the link between eating speed, feeling of fullness and overweight rates.

3,000 volunteers too part, half of whom reported eating quickly.  The results indicated that 84% of men and 50% of women who ate too fast were more likely to be overweight compared with those who ate at normal speeds.

When we eat the only two reasons we really stop is when we’re full or the food ran out.  To get the feeling of fullness, firstly hormones need to travel from the stomach to the brain informing how the eating process is coming along and secondly the stretch receptors in the stomach must indicate that it is filling up.

The problem however is that food takes sometime to travel from our mouths to the stomach and once it’s there the stretch receptors can be a little too slow to react.  It takes time for the brain and the body to get the ‘I’m full’signal.  By then many of us could have eaten twice or thrice more.

The advice naturally is to eat at a moderate pace and if you feel you need a second helping wait at least 30 minutes before you decide,or you could follow the saying hara hachi bu by the people of Okinawa,Japan, who are known to live long and healthy lives.  It simply means Eat Until 80% Full.
